Villeneuve Airport (ZVL) is a general aviation airport operated by Edmonton Airports, located northwest of Edmonton. It does not offer scheduled passenger flights — the aircraft you see and hear overhead are flight training, corporate, emergency services and recreational operations.

What happens here

ZVL supports flight training, corporate and business aviation, helicopter operations, aircraft maintenance, aerial survey work, emergency and medevac services, and recreational flying. Much of the traffic is training activity, which is why aircraft are often seen flying repeated circuits over the same area.

Why the airport matters to the region

The airport is a training ground for the region’s next generation of commercial pilots, a base for the businesses that maintain and operate aircraft across northern Alberta, and an operational backup for emergency and medevac flights serving the Edmonton Region.

Aircraft noise and flight paths

Pilots operating at ZVL are asked to follow published circuit procedures and to avoid noise-sensitive areas wherever safety and air traffic control instructions allow. Flight paths are determined by runway configuration, weather and air traffic control — not by choice of route.
